Initiatives

USGBC New York is the city’s premier forum for accelerating the marketplace adoption of green building. Our mission is to make New York one of the greenest cities in the world by influencing how buildings are designed and operated across the five boroughs and in neighboring Westchester and Rockland counties.

We are always in an advocacy mode, working with state and local governments, public and private sector entities, as well as the general public to promote the benefits of green building practices and support their widespread and rapid adoption.

In 2008, we are leading several major initiatives that will help embed green building into the city’s codes, educate local unions and trades about green building, and demonstrate why building green is building smart for economic as well as environmental reasons.

  • We kicked off a Green Codes Task Force in July 2008 to help green the laws and regulations that govern construction in the city – raising the bar for other municipalities to follow
  • We started a Green Construction Skills Training program that will develop a scalable education program, which will be made available to educational and governmental bodies, as well as to our union and contractor partners.
  • We are sponsoring a study on the cost of green building to debunk the myths around the payback of going green.

For students and young professionals, Emerging Green Builders (EGB) offers programs and events, including a Crash Course for LEED and an annual Project Earth Day Fashion Show, which showcases eco-fashion designers.

Ongoing educational programs include speaker series, green building tours, technical workshops, and much more. We also offer training for professionals on the basics of building green, host educational seminars and technical workshops, and create a community of interested professionals through networking events.

We host quarterly member meetings for us to gather informally, celebrate our achievements, recognize our leaders, plan for the future and have fun! View the events calendar.
